murdered Archbishop had been erased from churches throughout the country, again by order of Henry VIII.
The choir seats were paticularly interesting as they included all sorts of carvings, amongst them an elephant with hooves like a horse.Obviously the woodworker had never seen one!
I was surprised to find that Handel's 'Messiah' was first performed in Chester Cathedal, and thought how impressive the perfrmance must have been in these majestic surroundings.
I also saw a plaque on the wall commemorating Lucy Jodrell, Sarah Jodrell and Hannah Froggatt, 'all daughters of the late Francis Jodrell Esq of Yeardsley in the County Of Chester.' (late 18th early 19th Century.)
I think what I found most impressive was an area filled with brightly coloured paintings and drawings and other arefacts made by the chilren of today set by one of the chapels where the Benedictine monks who had become priests celebrated mass.
